Renowned local Ancestors

Biryu (Baekje legend)

Biryu is legendary as he founded the first clan kingdom in Incheon, called Michuhol at that time, by moving south from the Jolbonbuyeo Kingdom. As the elder son of the founder Jumong of the Goguryeo Kingdom, he founded the Michuhol Kingdom on the ridge of Munhaksan (Mt.) in B.C.18.


Kim, Min-sun (1542~1592,from the 37th year of King Jungjong's reign till the 26th year of King Seonjo's reign)

Kim, Min-sun was the civil minister during the reign of King Seonjo, with his ja (casual name) as Dalbu. During Imjinwaeran (Japanese invasion), as Incheon-busa (governor), he repaired Munhaksanseong (fortress) and successfully protected against the Japanese invasion. In honor of this success, he was promoted to Doseungji (secretary to a king).


Yi, Dan-sang (1628~1692; from the 9th year of King Injo's reign till the 10th year of King Hyeonjong's reign)

Yi, Dan-sang was the civil minister during the reign of King Injo, with his ja (casual name) as Yuneung and his ho (name after his favorites) as Seoho. In 1649, he passed the examination for government officials. He became Okdang, Byeongjojeongnang, Hodang, Jipui in 1664, and Bujehak with Seoyeongwan in 1669. From his academy, many scholars were raised such as his son Yi, Hui-jo, and Kim, Chang-hyeop. In commemoration of Yi, Dan-sang and his son, the governor Yi, Hui-jo, the Incheon residents built Haksanseowon on the ridge of Munhaksan (Mt.) in 1702 (the 28th year of King Sukjong's reign).


Kim, Eun-ho (1892~1979)

Kim, Eun-ho was born in Munhak, Incheon, and had ho (name after his favorites) as Idang. In 1906, at the age of 15, he himself quit Seodang (traditional private school) study, and entered Japanese school in Incheon, He quit the school to learn painting in Seohwa Art School in 1912, and became famous through Joseon Painting Exhibition. Later, he went abroad to study in Tokyo Art School for 3 years. After he got back to Korea, he founded the Art Association named Husohwe in 1936 in view of raising art students. He mainly painted portraits of historical figures such as Yi, Sun-shin, Chunhyang, and Nongae. In spite of a bad reputation as pro-Japanese artist, he had great influence on modern art history of Korea.
